Dr. Hartung is Professor of Neurology at Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf; Honorary Professor, Brain and Mind Centre, University of Sydney, Australia; Visiting Professor at Medical University Vienna, Austria; and at Palacky University Olomouc, Czech Republic. He holds an honorary doctorate from Palacky University Olomouc, Czech Republic.
His clinical and translational research interests are in the field of basic and clinical neuroimmunology, particularly exploring etiopathological mechanisms, defining the role of human endogenous retroviruses, the complement system, macrophages, adhesion molecules, designing and assessing new immune interventional and repair-promoting treatments in vitro, in experimental models and clinical trials.
He has served on Steering Committees and Data Monitoring Committees of numerous phase 2 and 3 trials in MS, NMOSD, CIDP and GBS .
He has published more than 1250 articles in peer reviewed journals .
