Carlos Marques Neves is a member of the Portuguese Medical Association (professional licence no. 31093) since 1987 and of the Speciality College of Ophthalmology since 1994. He completed is Ph.D. in Medicine (Physiology) in 2005 and in 2016 has become Fellow of the European Society of Ophthalmology.
He is currently the Clinical Director of ALM – Serviços de Oftalmologia Médica e Cirúrgica, position held since 2007, and in 2021 has become Hospital Graduated Assistant of the Ophthalmology service in the Hospital de Santa Maria (HSM/CHULN) (previously, between 2011 and 2021, he was Hospital Assistant in the same institution). More recently, he was appointed Director of the Study Centre for the Eye Sciences (2014-) and Director of the University Clinic of Ophthalmology of the Lisbon School of Medicine (FMUL) (2017-), also working as Associate Professor at FMUL (2020-). At the present time, he is the responsible for the medical residency in ophthalmology of the HSM/CHULN and Head Professor of curricular units (Ophthalmology) of the integrated master’s degree in Medicine of the FMUL and of the master’s degree (Scope) in Biomedical Engineering of the Instituto Superior Técnico of the same University.
Between 2017 and 2021, Carlos Marques Neves has given 18506 appointments and performed 3119 surgeries (2220 major surgeries, excluding intravitreal injections, and 899 minor surgeries), having the cataract and vitreoretinal surgery as his main area of intervention. He has also pioneered in Portugal the treatment of the myopic posterior macular staphyloma, a work that was then presented in October 2013, in one of the clinical sessions of the HSM/CHULN, under the topic of “Current affairs in medical and surgical retina”. In 2017, he performed, for the first time in our country, a transplantation of autologous retina, an intervention that was presented in December of that same year in the Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology.
Alongside his clinical and scientific career, Carlos Marques Neves has been responsible for and collaborator in several clinical trials, and national and internationally funded scientific projects. He has authorship/editing 15 books and book chapters and published more than 60 papers in indexed journals (Scopus h-index=14).
