Currently serves as the Executive Director of the University Hospital for Active Treatment in Neurology and Psychiatry “St. Naum” – Sofia, a position he held from 2001 to 2010 and resumed in 2012 to the present. He commenced his tenure at the University Hospital in 1988. During his career, he assumed the role of Deputy Rector of the Medical University – Sofia (2004-2008) and Deputy Minister of Health (2010). Academician Milanov specialized in neurology, clinical neurophysiology, social medicine, and health management.
He pursued further specialization in movement disorders and treatment of headaches at the University of Kansas – USA and Pavia – Italy. Since obtaining his Doctor of Medical Sciences degree in 1997, Prof. Milanov has been a Professor of Neurology since 2001. He became a Corresponding Member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 2012 and was subsequently elected as an Academician in 2015. Besides his affiliation with the Medical University of Sofia, he imparts knowledge at the University of Sofia, Sofia, the University of Pavia in Italy, and the University of Belgrade.
Prof. Milanov holds leadership roles in various neurological associations, including the Presidency of the Bulgarian Society of Neurology, the Bulgarian Headache and Pain Society, the Bulgarian Association of Movement Disorders and Multiple Sclerosis, and the Bulgarian Association of Clinical Electromyography. Additionally, he serves as the Vice-President of the Bulgarian Association of Neuroprotection and Neurodegeneration. On an international level, Acad. Milanov was the Treasurer and a Board Member of the European Headache Society (EHS). He represents Bulgaria in the European Stroke Organisation (ESO), the European Academy of Neurology (EAN), and the World Federation of Neurology (WFN). Furthermore, he is a Board Member of the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS). His memberships include the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS), the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), and the International Movement Disorders Society. Prof. Milanov also is a partner in the ResQ+ project.
