Hilz, Max J.

Prof. Dr. med. Dr.med.habil. Dr. h.c. Max J. Hilz, M.D.,

specialized in Neurology, Clinical Neurophysiology, Neurological Intensive Care Medicine, and Disorders of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). He was Professor of Neurology, Medicine, and Psychiatry at New York University, New York, NY, Chair in Autonomic Neurology at the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London, UK, and until April 2019 Professor of Neurology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. Since June 2015, he is also Adjunct Professor of Neurology at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY, USA. He also holds Honorary Professorships at the University of Transylvania in Brasov, Romania, and the University of Zhengzhou, China.

He chaired several autonomic societies and groups, e.g. at the World Federation of Neurology, the European and the American Academy of Neurology, or the European Federation of Autonomic Societies. He is on the editorial board or associate editor of five peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Hilz contributed to developing the UCNS Autonomic Disorders subspecialty examination and serves as advisor to the European Medicines Agency on autonomic issues. He co-authored several guidelines and published more than 360 articles and book-chapters.

Prof. Hilz is interested in peripheral and central autonomic nervous system disorders, particularly Hereditary Sensory and Autonomic Neuropathies, Fabry disease, and various central autonomic disorders.  He mentored more than fifty doctoral students and fellows from various countries during their stays in his autonomic laboratories in Germany or New York, and he feels committed to teaching junior colleagues.
