LeWitt, Peter

PETER A. LeWITT MD, MMedSc

Dr. LeWitt is a neurologist subspecializing in movement disorders. His undergraduate and medical education was at Brown University, followed by residency training at the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University Medical Center. Subsequently, he served as a research fellow in the Experimental Therapeutics Branch of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. In 1990, he was appointed as Professor of Neurology at Wayne State University School of Medicine, where he is the Sastry Foundation Endowed Chair in Neurology. In addition to extensive experience at designing and conducting clinical trials in neurological disorders, his research interests include animal models and biomarkers of neurodegenerative disease, gene therapy, clinical phenomenology, and pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic analysis. Dr. LeWitt was a founding member of the Parkinson Study Group and chaired its Scientific Review Committee. He now is the president of the Tremor Research Group. In 1998, he was elected as an officer of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society and was a member of that organization’s Task Force for the Development of Rating Scales for Parkinson’s Disease. Dr. LeWitt has received research grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, The Harris Foundation Neuroscience Program, the National Parkinson Foundation, the KiMe Foundation, and other organizations. He has been editor-in-chief of Clinical Neuropharmacology and has served on the editorial boards of Movement Disorders, Journal of Neural Transmission, Journal of Parkinson’s Disease, and Translational Neurodegeneration. In 2020, Dr. LeWitt was cited in Stanford University’s listing of World’s Top 2% Scientists.
