Bareš, Martin

Prof. MUDr. Martin Bareš, Ph.D.

Rector of Masaryk University and a prominent representative of the academic and medical community in the Czech Republic.

He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University and since 2009 he has been a professor at the First Neurological Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University and St. Anne’s University Hospital in Brno. As a Fulbright scholar and postdoctoral fellow, he completed a residency at the Department of Neuroscience and Neurology, Medical School, University of Minnesota, where he has been an adjunct professor since 2015.

As a professor of neurology, his research interests include movement disorders, Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, essential tremor, and spasticity.

At Masaryk University, he served as Vice-Rector from 2011 to 2018, as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 2018 to 2019, and as of 2019 he is the Rector. From 2021 to 2023, he was president of the Czech Rectors Conference, and in 2023 he was elected chairman of the Czech Association of Research Universities.
