Dr. Radek Matej is a pathologist and neuropathologist specializing in brain aging and associated disorders, most notably, Alzheimer’s, prion and other neurodegenerative diseases. Currently, he is a Full Professor of Pathology at the Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic and Head of Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine, Thomayer University Hospital and Department of Pathology, University Hospital Kralovske Vinohrady. He is serving as a Head of Czech National Laboratory for Diagnostics of Human Prion Disorders.
In 2020, Dr. Matej was among the founders of a brain bank in Prague, focusing on brain aging and neurodegenerative disorders.
His neuropathological laboratory is fully equipped for neurohistopathological, proteomic and molecular-genetic studies, more than 15 researchers investigate the factors influencing the clinical expression of Alzheimer’s pathology and protein expression in other neurodegenerations and in overlap, using better diagnostic tools, the identification of risk factors for dementia and speech disorders, and the identifications of changes related to therapeutic targets. The Lab combines analysis of postmortem human tissue with clinical and neuroradiological data as well as new experimental methodologies.
Dr. Matej is focusing not only on neuropathology, he is a specialist in the filed of pulmopathology, namely on molecular pathology of lung cancer and pathobiology of interstitial lung diseases. He was awarded by more than 10 research grants and published more than 150 scientific papers.
