Prof. Mitsikostas is Professor of Neurology at Aeginition Hospital, Medical School of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Greece, heading the Headache Outpatient Clinic and the Ward A of Emergency Neurology and Stroke. In addition, Prof. Mitsikostas co-chairs the Management Group of the Headache Scientific Panel at the European Academy of Neurology, currently he serves as President of the Hellenic Headache Society, and he is a Past President of the Executive Board of the European Headache Federation.
His clinical work is focused on headache, nocebo, pain and multiple sclerosis (MS), and he has been lecturing nationally and internationally on these subjects. He participates in several clinical trials for headaches and MS. He has authored over 150 peer-reviewed papers with more than 10,000 citations (h-index 40), served as Editor/Co-Editor of eight textbooks, and is a Reviewer and/or Member of the Advisory Boards of numerous peer-reviewed international medical journals. He is also a member of several national and international societies.
Prof. Mitsikostas graduated from the Aristotle’s University Medical School, Thessaloniki, Greece and he obtained his PhD in experimental neuropharmacology from the NKUA, Greece. He certified in Neurology at the Aeginition Hospital, NKUA, Greece. His post-doc studies were focused on the experimental molecular pharmacology of cephalic pain in the laboratory of Prof. M.A. Moskowitz at Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA and in the laboratory and headache clinic of Prof. P.J. Goadsby at the Institute of Neurology, University College London, UK. Prior to moving to the NKUA he was heading of the Neurology Department of the Athens Naval Hospital, at the Hellenic Navy.
